Adventures of the Super Sons #9 // Review
Peter J Tomasi continues his last ride with Jon and Damian as Scott Godlewski joins the title to pencil this issue. With boys still stuck in space, Tomasi uses this opportunity to take the duo on larger more out landing adventures before the title finishes. Godlewski continues that Saturday morning cartoon charm this series has previously established Peter as readers follow along with this heartwarming friendship.
As the boys manage to escape the albeit small clutches of Rex Luthor, they find themselves on a planet with a Wild West motif and come face to face with none other than Jonah Hex. Meeting the new cyborg Hex, the boys are aided by the vigilante cowboy as they need to head home before the inevitable alien invasion. This issue seems to play right into a very similar chapter previously, but Tomasi pulls a double heel turn on the reader before Jon and Damian manage to escape with some new friends.
Even though the changing artists, the series still retains the heart and affinity it has garnered since inception. Scott Godlewski brings the charm the series is known for and just has fun with the pages that are absolutely contagious. The juxtaposition between the brooding nature of Hex, alongside the calculated Damian and the lighthearted Jon, paints Jonah as satire, in turn adding another layer of entertainment to this chapter. One particular page stands out as Godlewski depicts a spread of Jonah Hex with the boys, fully displaying the juxtaposition between the adolescents and the rogue cowboy.
The love for these boys is undeniable as Tomasi continues his swan song with the duo together. With deep cut callbacks alongside taking these characters outside of their comfort zone, Tomasi plans to go all out before the series finale. The charming friendship between the boys is what truly carries the series, the duo could easily just be on the farm all issue, and it would still accomplish what the fans want; more Super Sons.
With three issues remaining Tomasi and Godlewski continue to drive this series home and deliver another humorous segment starring these fan favorites. As Jon and Damian’s friendship remaining in question outside of this series, the clock appears to be against the boys for the foreseeable future. As Tomasi and company continue to bring the heart to these beloved characters, fans will be waiting in anticipation for this cherished series
