Justice League 3 // Review
Scott Snyder and Jorge Jimenez continue to bring Justice League back into the spotlight as the flagship DC Comics ongoing title. Immediately picking up after last issue’s cliffhanger ending, John Stewart remains rogue and at the will of the Ultra Violet Lantern Ring as he faces down the League single handedly. As the Justice League returns to its rightful place within the DC Universe, the series continues to remain a nonstop blockbuster while managing to drive home the larger overarching narrative. As more secrets come to the surface, and with the Justice League spread apart, they find themselves in over their heads as the perpetual chaos takes control.
The highly detailed pencils of Jorge Jimenez jump right off of the pages in this epic tale. With his stylized artwork, Jimenez adds the cinematic feel back to this series it has so been lacking. Through art alone, all of the importance and bombast the title had been missing and deserving of is all returned in one fail swoop. Whether it is the wholesome character moments, the fast paced high action scenes or the scenes of down right horror Jimenez delivers on every possible level. Once again, Jimenez is aided by the absolutely stunning color work of Alejandro Sanchez. His colors leave each page exploding with vibrant hues from the beautiful cover through until the very end of the issue.
Snyder’s sense of layered storytelling shines brightest in this series, as his more complicated form of writing aids in the lack of importance the title had suffered from in the previous runs. His ability to use the ensemble cast of heroes and villains together, each with their own purpose to the overall story, lends strength all around as Snyder spreads the chess pieces further apart. With each issue, the use of the looming threat of The Legion Of Doom inching one step closer into the light creates a sense of anticipation and dread for what the League has still yet to face. As mysteries continue to form making their way to the surface, there is still yet so much ground to cover.
Yet again, Snyder and Jimenez display, in expert fashion, exactly why the Justice League are the world's greatest superheroes. Each issue grander than the last, this run continues to bring readers in and prove itself as it towers above the competition. The Justice League by Scott Snyder is the book of Summer 2018.
