X-Men Red #1 is the X-Men book fans have deserved

X-Men Red isn’t only the best X team book out right now, it’s also the X-Men book that fans have deserved and wanted for years. This book is not only just beautiful and a good read, it also is emotional at times,exciting and best of all a new direction for the X-Men which is something not generally associated with the X-Men. Marvels merry mutants have suffered from story telling the past few years that relies more on nolstalgia more than anything which has pushed the brand to become stale and boring. This book looks as though it’s gonna push us past that into a fun new direction.

This issue starts with an exciting rescue mission before backpeddling to how the team was put together. Normally this is an easy way to get the reader to be hooked at the beginning then adjust you to some of the slower story telling, but Tom Taylor brilliantly uses this in a somewhat different way. Tom Taylor doesn’t give us the regular by the numbers team assembly book, he shows what Jean means to each member and the respect that she has for them and the team has for her. There’s a moment between her and Nightcrawlee that is so simple and beautiful plus managed to make me a little misty eyed.

Another great theme to this book is that this isn’t the same world that Jean left. It’s changed a lot since her last death and seeing how she’s gonna handle all these changes is gonna be fun and interesting within itself. The book also ends with the entrance of a surprise villain that brilliantly fits perfectly into this book and with the character of Jean herself. Yes, this is very much Jean Greys book and that is very much a good thing. Tom Taylor writes Jean Grey as the best she has been in a long time.

Mahmud Asrars’ pencil work in this issue is great, especially with the way he uses facial expressions, it enhances some of the more emotional and exciting scenes of the book. His art is beautifully paired with the colors of Ive Svorcina that makes every color pop in a special way and makes you want to stare in awe at every panel in front of you.

This is an all around just great book that will make you feel a range of emotions while reading. Tom Taylor pushes the X-Men in a bold, new,exciting direction that still manages to respect the past.  

X-Men Red is gonna get an A+
