Super Sons #12 Super Sons of Tomorrow Finale
Tomasi and Gleason manage to put away all of their toys neatly while still leaving room for future conflict and growth for all three titles in the crossover. Savior, the rogue Tim Drake from the future, has sacrificed himself to save everyone from Superboy's supernova blast. He is sent hurtling through the timestream in a cascade of DCโs greatest hits to an undetermined destination. After our heroes gain a glimpse of what Savior witnessed it only poses more questions than answers.
Turning the fan service to eleven, Superman of today and Conner Kent the Superman of tomorrow finally meet again for the first time since Rebirth started. Early last year, after Superman Reborn wrapped up Conner Kent was seemingly retconned out of continuity. Seeing Conner tell Clark that they just haven't met yet gives so much hope and excitement for what is to come.
This issue has something special for all levels of DC fans. From Conner, Cassie and Bart (of Teen Titans and Young Justice fame) being brought back after years of absence to Savior falling through a collage of classic DC events of past and present. Being the finale, this issue does tend to read fast and wrap up rather quickly but with four issues previous it does not come off as rushed.
Tyler Kirkhamโs name has been coming up more often in the pages of DC comics from covers to interiors and it is quickly becomes apparent why. Kirkham has a way of โzooming inโ on the characters and really giving them each their own individual appearance making them his own while also being able to capture subtleties when โzoomed outโ as well. The page above displays perfectly how he can draw a group of diverse characters and individually nailing each one of them regardless of position on the page.
Yet another great moment of fan service and levity in this issue seeing the team in the Watchtower. But of course we are brought back to the debate over Superboy joining the Teen Titans full time. Damian is completely on board but after everything that has just happened but the team doesn't agree and Superboy is not voted into the team.
Tomasi and Gleason do a great job wrapping up this crossover and leaving behind seeds for future story lines in each of the titles while also carrying the Super Sons title forward. Per usual it's sincerely heart warming seeing Damian grow closer to the endearing Jonathan Kent as the months have gone on leaving me excited for what's to come next month.
