DC Collectibles Lucha Explosiva Display // NYTF2019
The DC Universes' heroes and villains are some of the most recognizable characters in the history of superheroes. One of the benefits of having vast iconography on the level of DC's stable is the ability to take those beloved characters and experiment with aspects of their designs and origins. Many comic fans could sing the praises of DC's Elseworlds line of books which created such favorite alternate takes to classic characters like Superman: Red Son or Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. DC's in-house toy company DC Collectibles have created numerous alternate takes on heroes to produce statues and action figures including the Ame-Comi line, DC Bombshells, and now DC Lucha Explosiva!
DC Lucha Explosiva re-imagines several DC heroes and villains as wrestlers in the proud Mexican tradition of Lucha Libre. Translated as "freestyle wrestling," Lucha is most recognizable to mainstream audiences as the subgenre of wrestling featuring masked performers and extraordinary acrobatic actions. The first wave of Lucha Explosiva figures will include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cheetah, Deathstroke, and Metallo. The character's original designs are translated exceptionally, with Superman and Batman having beautiful soft good capes and Cheetah sporting a stunning sculpt.
The figures feature extensive articulation to replicate a variety of action poses and will retail for $29.99-35 and are available for pre-order at Amazon, Big Bad Toy Store, and Entertainment Earth.
It is unknown at this time if DC Collectibles plans to expand on the line after the initial assortment. It would be unfortunate if DCC chooses not to continue making figures for Lucha Explosiva considering the design possibilities that could come from other characters. Characters like the popular hero of Mexican descent Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle or Batman's villainous rival Bane would fit right at home with the aesthetic of Lucha Explosiva.
