ANNOUNCEMENT! DC Comics' Joker Confirmed for Smash Ultimate // Satire
Yesterday, fans of Super Smash Ultimate are in total euphoria, celebrating the long-awaited first downloadable content for the game featuring the character Joker from Persona 5. In Persona 5, Joker is a high-school student who rallies his friends and classmates together to form a team of supernaturally powered vigilantes called the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. The game is very well-received which has generated a lot of excitement around Joker's inclusion in the Smash franchise. And yet, fans couldn't possibly be prepared for the announcement that followed after the DLC's release.
In a joint press statement with DC Comics, Nintendo has announced an unprecedented tie-in between Super Smash Ultimate and the upcoming Joker film by director Todd Philips. The Joker film follows the unrelated DC Comics character Joker, who is famous to the public as a long-running enemy to the superhero Batman.
"Super Smash Bros. is all about bringing together the most iconic characters possible under one game," explained game creator and director Masahiro Sakurai. "The opportunity to bring a character like DC's Joker into our game was too much of an exciting opportunity to pass up."
In the announcement, the two companies detailed the integration of DC's Joker in the game. DC's Joker will be an echo or "clone" fighter, using moves based on the Persona 5 character. DC's Co-Publisher Dan DiDio outlined the logic behind the crossover.
"Putting Joker in Smash based on Joker is brilliant," says DiDio. "They both have guns, knives, and are called Joker. No matter how you look at it it's a perfect match."
But not everyone is sold on the blending of properties. Joker's star Joaquin Phoenix has been confirmed to be providing vocal performances for the game and had some less than positive words to say on the subject.
"It's a little off-putting because so much of the movie is about challenging the establishment. There's nothing wrong with liking Hollywood blockbusters, but I signed up for the movie because it was a project that wouldn't have a video game deal. What's next? A Doritos promotion? Joker makeup line from Ulta?"
Fans have also been critical of the announcement, with some even accusing the promotion of being a blatant rip-off of the appearance of Marvel's Thanos in the game Fortnite. DiDio is unconcerned, stressing to fans that their fears will be alleviated when the DLC drops in the coming months.
"Sakurai and I also have plans for a tie-in comic to coincide with the release of the DLC," announced DiDio. It's called The Two Jokers, and is about both Jokers violently kicking Waluigi in the stomach for 48 pages."
Fans can purchase and play as Persona 5's Joker after downloading the 3.0 patch of the game, and can expect to play as DC's Joker later this year.
