Infinity Countdown: Darkhawk #4 // Review
It’s Darkhawk vs the Dark Starhawk, with the Earth in the balance!
Chris Sims, Chad Bowers, and Gang Hyuk Lim come together once more for this tie-in with Infinity Countdown. The lengthy-titled Infinity Countdown: Darkhawk has one last issue to go, and the crew goes all-out for this one.
The issue opens with a bang: Nova tries to intercept the Fraternity of Raptors and prevent them from arriving on Earth. However, someone’s beaten him to the punch: a starship-sized Darkhawk has just ripped it in half, in a delightful double splash page. Razor and Death’s Head quickly fill Nova in, as Darkhawk takes Nova inside him. Nova isn’t a fan of this, and rips out of Darkhawk to join the fight. In the resulting melee, Darkhawk and Nova take on the Fraternity and the Dark Starhawk. Only one side can walk away from this, and Death’s Head is more than content to stay out of the way.
This issue is nothing short of fantastic. Sims and Bowers have basically taken the crazy up to 11 for this one, and it plays out great. This issue is one massive brawl between cosmic powerhouses, with some great fight choreography. What’s even better is that the comic doesn’t feel crowded, instead giving everyone some great moments before the final page. The Dark Starhawk is an interesting character in this issue, and seems to be beyond what the Fraternity of Raptors expected. It will be interesting to see how he’s involved in the upcoming Infinity War, or if he’ll fade into the background like Darkhawk has in the past.
Not enough can be said about Lim’s art in this issue. The massive form of Darkhawk looks like a massively-armored medieval knight with arm wings, almost like something out of Warhammer 40k. The fights are visceral, with destruction and gore galore in ways that haven’t been seen since the climax of the event, Annihilation. It’s hard to find anything bad about this comic, and it would be great to see Lim get work on a major Marvel book.
This was a fantastic series. It’s refreshing to see a miniseries tie-in with a major event like this be so downright enjoyable, and it’s hard to see this book go. However, the issue ends with a cliffhanger…
