THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 455 A.D. ONE SHOT Review

The Wicked + the Divine returns with this one-shot issue set in 455 A.D. This issue has Lucifer rejecting his role as a god and trying instead to reinvent himself as a latter-day Julius Caesar. Naturally, this is *very* against the rules, but what do you expect from Lucifer?

This time around, Lucifer is a common street performer who decides to use his powers to create the ultimate role of a lifetime for himself - that of Julius Caesar. This is a problem, however, as it completely subverts known history. Lucifer's decision is completely in character, full of hubris and grandstanding. For the first time, the reader feels like Ananke is perhaps right that the new gods must die at a certain point, now that we see what they are capable of.

And therein is the crux of the story - is Lucifer right to take his life as his own or is Ananke right to require him to behave a certain way and to die at a certain time? I can't say much more without spoiling this issue, but it is a stand alone that is a very worthy addition to the series. Also, heads up for fans, this one-shot will NOT be included in Volume 5 of the graphic novel series so make sure to pick it up!!  Art: B+; Story: A; Dialogue: B.
