If you haven't picked this one up yet it is a *must read*!
In a dystopian near-future, government is a quaint concept, resources are coveted, and possession is 100% of the law. A handful of Families rule, jealously guarding what they have and exploiting the Waste who struggle to survive in their domains. Forever Carlyle defends her family's holdings through deception and force as their genetically engineered protector, their Lazarus.
Forever has been raised from birth to be a living weapon, and unbeknownst to her, many of her gifts were genetically engineered. She views her life as dedicated to her family, from whom she strives to gain any sign of affection or praise. Throughout the course of this book wars will be fought, mainly through the machinations of the very family Forever is sworn to protect. The politics between the families are intricate and very well detailed - a sourcebook to the world of Lazarus was just released on May 10, 2017 and it is very comprehensive and useful to the new reader while still continuing the story of the book. A fifth collected graphic novel is due out in June 2017.
The writing in this book is gritty and yet subtle and the artwork is a perfect complement - it's not overly detailed but each panel conveys emotion through the smallest of changes in the characters' expressions.
The plot is raw and addictive, depicting a post-apocalyptic society that seems all too possible. The character of Lazarus makes for an interesting anti-heroine, and the more we learn about her the more interesting she becomes. Readers will find this one hard to put down.
