The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #3 // Review

Kamala has had her hands full keeping Jersey City safe as Ms. Marvel, while juggling school, friendships, and her parents expectations for her future. But as soon as she starts to get the hang of things, another challenge comes her way. In the Magnificent Ms. Marvel #3, Saladin Ahmed sends Kamala to space to help mysterious aliens who claim she’s the “Destined One.” Minkyu Jung, Juan Vlasco, and Ian Herring provide the art for the issue (as penciler, inker, and colorist respectively), with VC’s Joe Caramagna as the letterer.

Kamala has found her parents again, but they won’t let her go into space alone. Nothing says family bonding like an impromptu intergalactic journey to a war-torn planet. In true superhero style, Kamala’s ready to fight and save the world but her parents are worried for her, and their worries are well founded because not everything is as it appears.

Ahmed changes things up a bit in this issue, having most of it narrated by Kamala’s mother. It gives a unique perspective, showing what others think of Kamala’s actions both as herself, and as a superhero.

While the story is good, it’s the art that really sells this issue. The style is on the cartoonish side of realism that combined with the softly shaded colors make everything flow from one panel to the next.

With each mission she undertakes, Kamala’s abilities are pushed to the limit, but so far she’s passed, growing as a hero and as a person. As the “Destined One” however, the fate of an entire planet is in her hands, making this a much bigger test than she’s ever faced before.
