Justice League #15 // Review

Following in the wake of Drowned Earth, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Stephen Segovia, and Jim Cheung explore Thanagar Prime with a League in dire straights and in the midst of a heist. Dialing back down, after the larger scaled crossover event, leaves room for previous plot points and mysteries to return into the light. Standing as the flagship title for DC, this series continues to deliver on all cylinders and bringing about an original and engaging read filled with a laundry list of master class artists.

Things begin to go south on Thanagar Prime as Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern must fight back against the Thanagarian Army led by Katar Hol, the Savage Hawkman. As if things couldn’t get worse, the Green Lantern Corps arrive to arrest John Stewart while J’onn learns of new revelations from one of his own. Back on Earth the Trinity watches over an explosive Starman, Will Payton, as he reveals HIS secrets.

Jim Cheung bookends the issue with a few of the first and last pages while Segovia carries the remainder of the pages. The transition between the two is noticeable, but when used to distinguish between Earth and Thanagar Prime it serves towards a greater purpose. Cheung delivers a handful of stellar pages, in his glorious signature style, displaying Starman in all his explosive resolve while Tomeu Morey blasts his glorious colors across the pages. Segovia handles the League’s escalating battle against their captors, while dealing with exposition and plotting against the forces of Thanagar. The view of Hawgirl’s homeworld is glorious , as Will Quintana brings a vibrancy that makes the planet come to life.

An ongoing theme for the issue, Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV work together on scripts, creating an indistinguishable voice between writers. Splitting writing detail proves to be incredibly lucrative for the duo, delivering a tighter knit story with heavy implications in the midst. Snyder and Tynion prove collaboration to be old hat and bring about yet another exciting issue to such an ambitious run on the title.

With the first year Justice League run winding into the next, this series continues to fires on all cylinders and expands upon the already grandiose DC Universe as a whole. Never skipping a beat, issue #16 loos to reveal the secrets of the DCU’s origin. Snyder and team propel this series to previously unseen levels. Justice League stands strong as the flagship title from DC Comics making it an absolute must read for all fans.
