Crosswind #1 Review - Get Ready For A Surprise June 22, 2017 Kate Baerkircher Crosswind is the new book from co-creators Gail Simone, writer, and Cat Staggs, illustrator that takes a surprising twist. Remember Freaky Friday where the mother and daughter switched bodies? Well, what if instead a hardened mobster and a defeated housewife switched bodies? One thing is for sure, both may feel like a fish out of water but I'm willing to bet that as the story progresses they each have profound possibly even positive effects on each other's lives. Our story begins with Cason, mob heavyman, completing an unpleasant assignment. Cannot stress enough the beauty and detail of Staggs's artwork - the characters look like real individuals and reinforce the reality of the situation. The story continues with Juniper, a sad housewife constantly being treated like a sexual object by the neighborhood kids and as a (at least verbal) punching bag for her husband. Again, the artwork underscores the story - you can see the desperation and depression in Juniper's eyes as the story progresses. Cason's chance encounter with a vagrant will change both he and Juniper's lives forever. The question is, will Juniper be able to handle Cason's violent lifestyle and will Cason beat the ever-loving snot out of Juniper's tormentors - I for one can't wait to find out. Everything about this book, the dialogue, the art, the characters, everything is a complete win - an A+ on all fronts.
